IVF Acupuncture: Optimizing Your Fertility Treatment

Congratulations on beginning your IVF journey. Our fertility acupuncture program can play a significant role in supporting this process and increasing your chances of successful implantation and healthy childbirth.

The Science Behind Acupuncture and IVF

Multiple peer-reviewed studies demonstrate acupuncture's effectiveness in improving IVF outcomes. Research shows that acupuncture can improve both egg quality and quantity—a crucial distinction, as IVF hormones increase egg numbers but don't necessarily improve quality. Acupuncture helps smooth hormonal fluctuations, directly improving egg quality.

Recommended Timeline

We recommend beginning acupuncture approximately three months before attempting IVF, as this represents a full egg development cycle. This extended preparation period allows acupuncture to optimize ovarian function and hormone balance.

Benefits of IVF Acupuncture

  • Improve ovarian function and egg quality
  • Regulate menstrual cycles
  • Increase follicle production
  • Enhance uterine blood flow and lining thickness
  • Regulate immune system function
  • Reduce miscarriage risk
  • Improve sleep quality and energy levels

Treatment Timeline and Frequency

Pre-IVF Preparation (3 months prior)

We recommend one acupuncture session per week. If this frequency isn't possible, we still see excellent results with treatment during the IVF cycle itself, though we may increase frequency.

During IVF/IUI Cycle

One session per week is standard. If you haven't received pre-cycle acupuncture, we may recommend two sessions per week during the cycle.

Egg Retrieval

Acupuncture 1-2 days before retrieval helps relax the cervix and increase blood flow to the uterus, supporting optimal retrieval outcomes.

Post-Retrieval

Treatment after retrieval aids healing, minimizes bloating and cramping, and prepares the uterus for implantation.

Embryo Transfer

We recommend acupuncture both before and after transfer. Sessions 1-2 days prior help promote uterine blood flow and prevent contractions, while post-transfer treatment supports implantation and reduces stress.

Post-Transfer Support

During the first trimester, we typically recommend one session per week. Second and third trimester visits are usually scheduled every two weeks.

Comprehensive Fertility Support

Acupuncture supports not only conception but also carrying a pregnancy to term. Some patients struggle with conception while others have difficulty maintaining pregnancy. If non-structural factors are contributing to fertility challenges, Traditional Chinese Medicine can significantly improve outcomes.
